This Barista Battle is intended to stimulate, enhance, awaken, improve
coffee the brewing ways and tastes, build awareness, wow and show off
the independent specialty coffee brewing here in the San Diego area.
This Battle is a modification of the United States Barista Competition,
USBC, and various “Latte Art Freehand” competitions being held around
the globe.
1 st Place $535.00, Silver Medallion and Plaque , plus 2
round trip Airline tickets and lodging to compete in the “Western
Regional Barista Competition” to be held March 2006 in Sebastopol, CA.
(Winners of that qualify for the National Barista Competition April
2006 in Charlotte, N.C.)
2 nd Place $335.00, Silver Medallion and Plaque.
3 rd Place $235.00 and Plaque
• This Barista Battle will be
held at Cafe Moto Roasting Factory 1220 J street, San Diego CA 92101 in
view of judges, competitors, media and the interested public.
• Scheduled event is November 3 rd, 2005 5:00 pm –11:00pm
• Space is limited. $35.00 per entry.
• This Battle is open to anybody
working in the coffee/hospitality industry for a San Diego based
enterprise, one entry per location please
• All entries must be received on or before the October 6 th, 2005 preliminary meeting.
This Barista Battle is intended to stimulate, enhance, awaken, improve

Barista Battle Ground
• 1 Espresso
• 1 Cappuccino
• 1 Caffe Latte
• 1 Baristas’ Choice
Concept guidelines and rules.
Each Barista will have 20 minutes total to set up and prepare his or
her bar, create the beverages and close the bar. All beverages must
contain prepared espresso and are to be alcohol free. Beverages served
in any order. 3 Judges will evaluate and score on:
1 Beverage introduction, description, theme and creative flair.
2 Technical correctness of shot extraction and milk frothing. (USBC standards apply)
3 Display, taste and flavor of beverages as relates to the theme.
4 Timing and cleanliness of performance.
A 100-point structure will be used. Each judged category is worth a
total of 1-25 points. Highest total score wins, followed by second
highest, followed by third highest. Barista will begin by starting an
official timer and finish by stopping the same timer. 5 points will be
removed from the total score for every 15 seconds over time limits.

• Espresso Grinder
• Knock Box
• Work Table
• Ice
• Vita Mix Blender
• Trash receptacle
• Washing area
Barista must bring: all coffee beans and other beverage ingredients,
cups, saucers, hand tamp, cleaning cloths, related brewing tools and
may bring an espresso grinder of their own. Preparation is key. Time
limits and fairness will not allow exceptions.
The Head Judge Committee has final authorization concerning problems or
issues that occur during performances. Total scores will be calculated
and the winners announced. In the event of a tie, Baristas will address
the espresso machines, based on coin toss, prepare an espresso beverage
of their choice, and present it to a 7 member-judging panel. The panel
will then evaluate and decide a winner, or repeat this process until a
winner is decided.
Registered competitors will be required to attend a preliminary
briefing and espresso bar display, to confirm rules and answer
questions. This briefing will take place October 6 th 2005 at 3:00 pm
at Cafe Moto. At this briefing, names will be drawn to secure time
slotting of contest. |
