Day One(Judges Training)
After a long day and night, both of driving and karaoke, the alarm on
my cell phone wakes me from my slumber on the floor in the spare room
of Bronwen Serna’s house. Ms. Serna was kind enough to offer a
potential judging candidate shelter in Seattle, because her house
happens to be within a hop, skip, and jump from the Zoka
roastery, the location of the judges certification class. Both
disheveled and bleary eyed, I make my way to her kitchen to boil some
water for my morning salvation, a French press of El Salvador
Kilimanjaro. After a few minutes of anticipation, my comrades
Bronwen and Stephen shuffle into the kitchen, and we all sate our
fogginess with a small cup of coffee. I peer over the judging
guides, making sure that every last detail is being stored in my head,
because I know there is a test coming up. This is a test I want
to pass.

How to Choose Your Barista |

The pursuit for quality coffee includes finding a skilled barista
- the person who makes the drinks at an espresso bar or coffeehouse.
In Italy, barista is a coveted title. It's a career that requires
significant apprenticeship and for which no one would assume the title
unless he or she could profess to having dedicated time and practice
to this art. Here in the United States, the term barista is given
to anyone who happens to be standing within ten feet of an espresso
machine, whether he or she is truly skilled at the job or not. So
how do you determine if the person making your drinks is truly a skilled
barista? Here are some clues to watch for: |

Café Femenino - Empowering Women & Strengthening the Coffee Industry

Gaylene Smith isn’t afraid to take a leap of faith. In fact, that kind of daring is
precisely what inspired the creation of Café Femenino, an ambitious
project created last year to connect and empower female coffee growers
in origin countries that have traditionally offered few rights to
women. For more than a decade, Smith, co-owner of Organic Products
Trading Co. (OPTCO) in Vancouver, Wash., has been importing coffee from
co-ops in remote areas of northern Peru, a country where a shocking
number of women suffer from daily oppression and physical or emotional
abuse.

Espressocraft Tamper update: |
|
|
|
|
Wednesday, 31 August 2005 |
First I would like to thank you for your continued interest and support.
Due to the higher than expected demand, we chose to hire an outside
manufacturer to handle the production of our tampers. The company
that was hired gave us every reason to beleive that they could
produce our tampers with the same level of quality and care that we
created in our own facility. Unfortunately this was not the case, and
we discovered flaws in the recent production run of tampers that were
due to be released on September 1st. Due to this unexpected delay
we have chosen to resume production locally, under the direct
supervision of our own engineer. We expect to have the next
production run ready for early Fall, 2005.
As much as it pains us to delay the release of our products, we feel
that nothing is more important than quality. Espressocraft will
not settle for anything less. We believe that our customers choose our
products because of the exceptional quality and attention to detail,
therefore we will not ship a single tamper that is not perfect.
We will be sending out an e-mail as soon as we have the next release date.
Thanks again for your support.
